Just When You Thought…Redux!

More cholesterol confusion awaits! Many patients are often given a type of combination therapy to help lower their “bad” cholesterol and raise the “good” cholesterol. This combination therapy often involves a class of medications known as statins and niacin. If the statin is successful in lowering the LDL, or “bad” cholesterol the addition of a niacin based medication to raise the HDL or “good” cholesterol may actually make things worse. The National Institute of Health (NIH) recently stopped a study in progress after 32 months because it appeared that this combination may be causing more harm than good. Just another example of seemingly logical treatments falling short when we invoke The Law of Unintended Consequences.
